1974 Corvette Stingray

The arrival of the 1974 Chevy Corvette occurred during an abysmal period in automotive history. The period in question actually began in October 1973 when OAPEC plus Egypt, Syria, and Tunisia proclaimed an oil embargo against the United States. Long lines for gas sprung up nationwide, and the era of the large engine muscle car was coming to an end. Instead of pure power, companies focused on conveniences, and smooth ride, and this year Corvette is exemplary of the times. One has to love the design on this curvaceous Corvette. From its sting ray-esque nose, flared fenders, low slung panels and rounded off rear. For 1974, a new rear bumper system replaced the squared tail and chrome rear bumper blades introduced in 1967 the new rear design was quite beautiful, and more up-to-date than the 60’s shape that it replaced with the vast majority of enthusiasts embracing the new design. For the 1974 model only, casting limitations mandated left and right bumper covers with a vertical center seam. Tailpipes were now turned down as the new bumper cover eliminated the tailpipe extensions.

This 4 speed manual example of the iconic Stingray was first registered in Canada in 1974 where it obviously lived a pampered life covering a relatively low mileage before being exported to Nelson, New Zealand in 1996 with 70893 miles on the odometer. The vehicle has had 5 enthusiast owners since living in New Zealand each improving the car while under their ownership.
